Adding/Subtracting Fractions

Adding/Subtracting Fractions Exercise

To Add Fractions, follow these steps:

Check to see if the denominator of each fraction is the same. If so, adding fractions is easy. Simply add the numerators and keep the same denominator.

$$\frac{3}{7} + \frac{2}{7} = \frac{5}{7}$$

However, if the two (or more) denominators are not the same, you have to make them the same by finding the Least Common Multiple of the denominators. See the example below:

$$\frac{5}{8} + \frac{1}{12} = \left(\frac{3}{3} \right)\left(\frac{5}{8}\right) + \left(\frac{2}{2} \right)\left(\frac{1}{12}\right) = \frac{15}{24} + \frac{2}{24} = \frac{17}{24}$$

You follow the exact same process for Subtracting Fractions, except this time there is a minus sign in the middle and you have to subtract the numerators to the right from the numerator on the left.
