It's like they didn't want to commit to a full relationship!

Some examples would be:

$4x$

$2x+3$ — note that all the pieces do not need to have a variable (sometimes numbers just want to hang out with letters).

$7y + 2y$

$y^3-y$ — note that the variable $y$ can be raised to powers (power to the $y$!).

$x+y-z$ — note that we can mix variables (a regular math party).

$3x^5+48m^2-37z^{-2}$ — even this horrendous expression is valid! (It's the math equivalent of a chaotic family reunion).

Algebraic expressions might look like a random assortment of numbers and letters, but they have their own kind of order. Just think of them as the free-spirited artists of the math world, creating without the constraints of an equals sign.
