Identical Machines Exercise

Sometimes in work/rate problems, there a bunch of Identical Machines working together. When this happens, we have to adjust the work/rate formula a bit, where $n$ is the number of identical machines (or some other identical entities).

$$w = nrt $$

Example

If $5$ identical machines can create $100$ bolts in two minutes, how many bolts can $27$ identical machines create in four minutes?

Step 1: Calculate the rate of just one machine using the formula above.

$$100 = (5)r(2)$$

$$r=10$$

So one of these machines can create $10$ bolts per minute.

Step 2: Solve the problem with the new information.

$$w = (27)(10)(4)=1080 \ bolts$$
